John has been involved professionally in fundraising and mentoring on philanthropy in excess of 20 years.  He is an effective fundraiser having managed various major fundraising projects throughout Australia.  John is currently advising on a $30million fundraising project.

In 1988 John established Clelland Associates & EDOMS a consulting, advisory and training service specialising in Fundraising, Educational Advancement, Philanthropy and Community Relations and is currently advising a number of Schools.

EDOMS conducts reviews of School Fundraising, Development, Community and Alumni operations and assists in the establishment of effective structures.    As a specialist facilitator and exceptional mentor in educational philanthropy  John has been instrumental in producing successful training programs for the implementation of strategic and fundraising plans for the Ultimate Development Office structure as captured in EDOMS Trademark "From Enrolment to Memorial" ® 

With over 40 years hands on experience Principals John & Morag have designed a unique Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database MATES® as the professional tool to support Fundraising, Alumni and Community Relations & Development Offices.

John advises Schools & Foundations in the interpretation of ATO regulations as it relates to School fundraising having lobbied for five years to obtain government support to instigate and recognise the importance of tax deductibility for scholarships and bursaries in schools.


John was a member of the Australian Treasury, Community Consultative Committee and the ATO User Research Project working on the legislation for the Scholarships, Bursaries and Prizes DGR introduced by government in 2006.


John presents at International & National conferences and facilitates a series of Educational Philanthropy workshops for Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ).

With partner Morag, John is a co-author of Educational Philanthropy books and articles on Establishing the Ultimate Development Office, Fundraising, Annual, Major and Bequest Programs, Prospect Research, Foundation Structures, Effective Sponsorships and Corporate Partnerships, Alumni & Community Relations, Governance and Volunteer Training.  These books are available electronically on this site.

John was awarded the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Scholarship to attend the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) Conference New Orleans 2003.

John lectured at the Darwin University, worked with the Commonwealth Government in South Australia and Northern Territory, and spent seven years in remote areas of Papua New Guinea as a Magistrate and Assistant District Officer. 

As a child John was introduced to fundraising conducting the first door knock appeal for the SSPCA in Scotland.

John is the proud father of Scott Hocknull the 2002 Young Australian of the Year and Craig Hocknul USPGA and Australian PGA member.

In 2008 Morag was head hunted for the position of Manager Philanthropy and Corporate Relations for The Endeavour Foundation. Australia's largest service provider of opportunities for people with a disability. BRW Top 200 business.

Morag is an experienced leader and motivator in educational philanthropic giving and Foundation operations, having raised in excess of $20million and is currently managing a $25million fundraising project.

Morag was the full time Director of Development at Somerville House for over thirteen years implementing the Ultimate Development Office philosophy as captured in the trademark "From Enrolment to Memorial" ® of Clelland Associates Pty Ltd. 

As a Director of EDOMS Morag was the consulting Director of Development at Somerville House. 

Morag also advises a number of Schools and Foundations specialising in fundraising and philanthropic strategies, Community Engagement, Volunteer and Board Training.  Morag has established a successful Youth in Philanthropy program promoting the benefits of educating students in philanthropy.

In 2002, Morag was the first in the secondary education profession to Graduate from QUT with an academic qualification in Business, Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies.

Morag lectured in Public Relations & Communications at the Darwin University, was the Executive Officer with a peak Aboriginal organisation in NT for ten years and experienced seven years in remove areas of Papua New Guinea.

The complex structures within the education and non-profit sectors require good management and governance, sound strategic planning and implementation and Morag has demonstrated the ability to carry out these roles and achieve financial success. 

Morag's entrepreneurial leadership in educational philanthropy and relationship building has been recognised by her peers.
